<P>A new concrete surface has been constructed along the busy Monterrey-Nuevo Laredo highway in Mexico. This route is of prime importance both for Mexico and its neighbour, the US, as it is the main export-import route between the two countries.Located in northeast Mexico, the Monterrey-Nuevo Laredo highway connects Mexico with the state of Texas in the United States. The route carries 52% of Mexico’s imports and exports and is crucial to the country’s economy, as well as for that of the US.</P>
<P>CEMEX Mexico contributed to the restoration of the route, which had become severely deteriorated since it was last repaired. The high percentage of heavy trucks using the route had worn out the road surface leaving it in poor condition.With more than 15,000 truckloads flowing across this highway daily, its repair required durable construction materials that guarantee road safety. The Mexican authorities opted to reconstruct the route with a concrete surface and CEMEX Mexico supplied 98,000m3 of hydraulic concrete to restore a 15.6km stretch of the highway that was in particular need of attention.</P>
<P>This new hydraulic concrete surface has provided a flat, high stiffness-bearing surface that will allow vehicles to travel safely on the Monterrey-Nuevo Laredo route. This concrete maintains its stiffness over time and is able to support higher volumes of traffic and loads than other surface types. In addition, concrete paving features high durability and requires minimum maintenance.</P>
<P>CEMEX Mexico was able to resurface the road without stopping traffic during peak periods. Different work shifts were employed to minimise the potential effect on the busy highway and ensure correct placement of the concrete.This project required the transportation of more than 30,000tonnes of cement over winding sections of highway and directly employed more than 100 people.</P>

<P>Pneumatic concrete dowel drills have one purpose – to drill holes. While their intended use is easy to recognize, operation of this equipment isn’t quite so simple. In fact, it’s a bit of a science. That’s not to say they’re difficult to operate. But there are certain best practices and processes to keep in mind for proper drill operation, whether it’s an on-grade, slab-rider or equipment-mounted model. Operators who adopt these guidelines and implement them on every job are rewarded with better performance from the machine and fewer hassles overall.</P>
<P>Before even getting the drill close to a concrete slab, a few simple preparations are needed. A pneumatic dowel drill virtually comes out of a box, poised to go to work; all it takes to ready it for a job is air, a drill bit and a couple simple steps. Specific instructions vary with each make and model, so follow the exact recommendations in the owner’s manual. Generally speaking, the basic items begin with attaching and securing the air hose from the compressor to the drill. Next, install the drill bits. When doing so, it’s necessary to have the correct bit guide bushing to match the bit. This centralizes the bit and keeps it from moving around too much. The bit also must be the proper chuck size for the drill. Adjust the drill spacing and height, level the drill and set the drilling depth.</P>
<P>Finally, be sure to start with the proper lubricating oil in the oiler. Most manufacturers recommend rock drill oil, as it’s heavy and thick enough to run this large of a piece of equipment. Some operators may try to use pneumatic tool oil or even automatic transmission fluid. These types of lubricants are much lighter and almost a watery consistency. While ideal for smaller tools, like impact wrenches, these lubricants often won’t stand up to the demands of a large dowel drill.</P> 
<P>After these basic preparations, a dowel drill is almost ready to begin its job. Prior to any actual drilling, every operator should know the basics of proper use to ensure a smooth process and end result. Following a few guidelines will result in projects that are completed efficiently, safely and without equipment failure. whether they’re new pours or full-depth repairs.</P>

<P>When the Ministry of Public Works in the Belgian State of Flanders decided to reconstruct and resurface 19km of the N49 Antwerp-Knokke Expressway, continuously reinforced concrete paving (CRCP) with an exposed aggregate surface was the natural material choice. Indeed exposed aggregate, with its high grip and low noise benefits, has been the first option for all motorway surfacing work in Belgium since the 1980s.</P>
<P>However, the €15.65 million contract is not a like-for-like reconstruction project. Main contractor, Belgian firm Aswebo, has had to mill off 23cm of asphalt paving before commencing reconstruction. A 5cm layer of asphalt ABT-B course was then laid, above the previous foundation course and beneath the new CRCP, to prevent water ingress into the foundation layers.</P>
<P>The CRCP is being laid in a 23cm deep layer in three widths along the two-lane highway. Aswebo has called upon sub-contractor Roos Group to install the initial 6m wide pavement, which includes the outside faster lane of the road, with tie bars inserted into the side of the concrete to connect to a 4.75m wide lane and hard shoulder with a drainage gully that will be laid later. A 1m connecting strip of concrete will also be laid between the 6m wide lane and the existing concrete step barrier in the centre of the highway.</P>
<P>Roos Group is using a Guntert %26 Zimmerman S600 paver to lay the 6m wide pavement, while Aswebo will employ its own paving machinery for the 4.75m and 1m width sections. The job is being carried out in five separate contract phases, with a total of 230,000m2 of new concrete paving to be laid.The first phase includes 7.3km of continuous roadway on the eastbound carriageway, while the second phase is for just 2km of pavement. However there is a distance of 25km between these two phases. Phase three includes the construction of 4km of concrete step barrier, with the fourth phase providing the westbound carriageway of the 7.3km phase one section.</P>
